Why do I need two plugs?

By admin | June 12, 2009

Nearly everything electrical I buy insists on giving me two plug leads one that works in the UK and one that works in other parts of Europe. How wasteful is this? I don’t need the ‘other parts of Europe’ plug nor, I would imagine do 99% of people in the UK (and vice versa).

I don’t get two different nationality plugs with Apple purchases (well done there) but when I buy a new Acer or Samsung monitor or some other electronic thing (DVD, HDD etc.) I’m given an extra plug that I now need to dispose of.

“Oh here’s another brand new, unused plug lead that I have no use for that I need to  recycle, store, dispose of… yippee!

Why can’t these companies figure out how not to be wasteful?”

Surely in the long run it’s going to be more cost efficient (not to mention customer friendly and environmental) to update the  packing and distribution / logistics capabilities so that I only get the plug I need for my country and not a spare that I can use in case I decide to move to a different country where plugs work differently?

Now… where can I get rid of this unwanted item? Recycle it? Well, it’s hard enough to find somewhere to take working electrical equipment, let alone plug leads…

No, maybe it’s time to start sending them back the company in an envelope without any stamps on… They might soon get the message and stop wasting resources…

Anyone else care to join me?
